Augrabies National Park   1 comment

The drive from Kimberley to Augrabies is long and pretty boring and we were very glad to arrive.  The weather was a nice 28C and after spending almost an hour trying to find somewhere to camp in the shade we set up house. The campsite is nice but a shambles as the sites are not demarcated and the camp is busy.

Imagine our horror when we nearly froze to death for the rest of our time there, we really did not need shade.  After a nice 28C, we had minus 5 outside and minus 0.5 inside…. not fun.   The high of the day was a Scottish 6C and the wind was blowing a gale.  Turns out there was snow in Springbok (some 300kms away).  So off we went for a drive.

Augrabies is lovely.  The geology is stunning and with their famous quiver trees it makes for some remarkable scenery.

The birding is also magnificent and we managed to get 9 lifers in one day despite the cold and wind.  We were also very fortunate to see a pair of nesting Black Eagles.

We even managed to have a little Scottish style picnic….

As well as great scenery and birding, they also have a lovely bar and restaurant with friendly service and great food. Augrabies is another place we would return to but in warmer and perhaps wetter times.
